Week Two at Site: Huts

I’m enjoying the huts but it’s going to take some time to get use to them. Simple tasks require so much energy; laundry, cooking, showering, getting in and out of my huts. The doors are about four feet tall. It’s tiring having to bend over every time you want to come or go. You don’t realize just how much energy you spend doing these things until you lay down at the end of the day absolutely exhausted.

Cozy.

Sleeping under a mosquito net is quite bizarre, but I like it. You feel like you’re sleeping in a cloud. Also, due to the dull grey color of my hut walls, I decided to buy a pink flowery duvet. I love it. Mom, you are right, a beautiful and comfortable bed is one of the most important parts of a hut.

There is nothing more beautiful and surreal than baking in a hut. I’ve successfully made chocolate chip cookies and have now deemed Thursdays my cookie baking days. Next week snickerdoodles! Also, I’ve decided to try to bake all my bread. My first attempt was a failure – flat, doughy, soapy tasting. I have two years to figure it out, hope that’s enough time. I’m pretty sure I used too much water, didn’t let it rise enough, and I cooked it at too low a temperature. What else could I have done wrong? It can only get better. It tasted like soap because I accidentally, while staying with meme Iileka, stored the flour with the laundry detergent. Who would have though the detergent would flavor the flour?

Kakuni and Shaine. Little Kakuni likes to spend all her time with me. Not sure if she likes me or just wants sweets. Either way I enjoy her company. She speaks no English, which is helping my Oshindonga quite a bit. Unfortunately, the only new phrases I’m learning are centered around a young child; careful, don’t touch, that’s hot, I’m sorry I don’t have any sweets. Shaine is my little helper. He’s considerate and is willing to guide me through the simplest of tasks with a smile. Last Thursday I let him crush the chocolate for the cookies. He’s also easy to amuse.

Kakuni

For those of you who know…terrifying.

Pit latrine and sunset, what more could you want?
